Reviews

4 reviews for SURFACE SE

  1. Darien

The silverback surface SE is an amazing trail/enduro bike.
I’m comfortable on it, it rides fast and smooth and Enables me to achieve and do the impossible. This bike is limitless, it absorbs rocks and squashes jumps and drops with ease. I severely and enjoy and love my silverback surface SE and Would not trade it for another bike.

  2. Hanco Binneman

The Silverback Surface is a good reliable bike with a good value for money ratio. It is well suited for the South African Trail/Enduro market as a good all rounder.

There are however a few things I would improve on and they are as follows:

    1. Upon receiving my bike I immediately found that the pivot bearings and axles were dry and required grease. It had an annoying creak sound.

    2. The headset bearing was also dry and required grease.

    3. The frame design only allows for a small water bottle and only 1 bottle cage to be fitted. I would suggest that space be made for full size water bottels and that a secondary mounting be supplied elsewhere on the frame for a secondary bottle cage.

    4. The Duroc rims are not the most durable of rims for a bike that can handle the punishment that the Surface can. Personally I think the Duroc rims are a miss match for the hard riding and good suspension platform that the Surface offers.

    5. I would suggest that the plastic cover by the bottom bracket be extended and covers up the under tube cable runs. This would protect them the cables and also add value to the bike as well as add to the aesthetics of the frame.

    6. In general the M size is quite short in terms of modern frame geometry. I would love to see a few mm’s added to the TT.

    7. I would also love to see a slightly slacker HA and lower BB with the flip chip making more of a difference than the 0.5 degrees that it currently does.

    8. I would love to see dedicated areas for mounting of custom tools and necessities in and on the frame. This adds value to not just the frame but also the brand and puts them on par with other brands currently leading the market in this aspect.

    9. It would be a good idea to supply the bike out of the box in tubeless. 99% of riders will ride a tubeless setup.

    10. Lastly, the overall bike is slightly on the heavy side and small things can be done to improve on that. This has a negative effect on it’s pedaling ability and makes it feel sluggish and hard to get up the hill.

    No for the positives:

    1. The fact that a BSA bottom bracket was chosen is great since that is what the market is asking for.

    2. The suspension platform is nice, progressive and confidence inspiring on the trail. It tracks the ground well when setup correctly and serves for a very good descending bike.

    3. The parts specified on the surface is good value for money.

    4. The grips are very comfortable and the shaped ends gives your hand a good indication on where the end of the grip is.

    5. A short stem and wide bars serve for some sharp and accurate steering which is great on a mid range travel 29″ trailbike.

To sum it up in terms of riding, you need to put in some serious effort to get it up the hill but you will soon forget about that once the trail starts pointing down. The Surface will put a smile on you face and some trailside woop woops as you hit those corners and bulldoze through the rough stuff. The Surface will make the slower rider faster but the racer will look for a bike with a bit more racing pedigree.

  3. Francoin

The Surface is more capable than the 140mm travel promises.
Go full enduro and the Surface becomes a rowdy bike that slams into corners, flies stably and make line choices easy to commit to.

  4. Ray Smith

My Silverback Surface changed my riding as it’s so versatile and I could use it for the Enduro and the longer 60km rides! Definitely an all round amazing bike with great spec’s!
