What is asymmetry and how do we use in bike design?
On a bicycle, the drivetrain is on the right side, the brake calipers on the left side, and the suspension (usually) around the centre. When riding, the environment influences the wheels, consequently the suspension and frame. When braking, it inflicts major forces on the left side of the bike, whereas acceleration and pedaling affects the right side of the bike.
Asymmetric design does away with the conventional stigma that a frame drive side should mirror the non-drive side. Reinforcing where it is needed and using less material where it isn’t. Allowing product engineers to create a lighter but stiffer frame.
Asymmetry in action
Our recently released, Statos models is, of course, an excellent example of a purpose engineered asymmetrical frame. Resulting in a unique looking, lightweight XC race machine, strong enough to take on modern XCO and XCM courses. View the full Stratos Range HERE.
Nothing in nature is symmetric, riding forces are not symmetric so why should your bike be? Find out more about asymmetry in bike design by watching our brand new video: What is asymmetry?
The Stride SX is the first to launch from our all-new Stride mountain bike range. Featuring all the elements of a high-end racing bike but at a fraction of the price. With the brand new 12 Speed SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, this bike undoubtedly has a competitive edge over other mid-level bicycles.
This bike features Silverback POP (Position of Power) geometry which places the rider more central on the bike, therefore improving balance, climbing as well as traction.
A slacker head angle of 67.5 degrees not only inspires confidence but improves handling over the technical terrain that modern cross-country tracks offer. Currently available in two colour options.
Aimed to cater to the younger races, such as school series racers, this bike uses our Sweet spot geometry. Meaning the extra small and small will have 27.5” wheels however the Medium and large will have 29” wheels.
Other key features of this bike include:
tapered head tube
internal cable routing
dropper ready post ready
progressive trail geometry
tubeless ready wheels and tyres (valves and rim tape also included in the box).
The Stride SX is the first to launch from our all-new Stride range. Featuring all the elements of a high-end bike at a fraction of the price. The brand new 12 Speed SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, gives this bike a competitive edge over other mid-level bicycles. In the Press release you will find everything you need to know about this brand new platform.
The Stride SX is more than a recreational bike. An engineered frame keeps the weight down coupled with geometry that places the rider in the Position Of Power and Silverback’s ethos of offering the Right Bike at the Right Price means that it is a serious contender. Featuring our POP geometry as piloted on the Slade, the Stride is a confident descender that handles like a proper trail bike.
WATCH NOW: WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: SIABLO CF – CARBON GRAVEL BIKE
The Siablo CF designed with the focus on gravel riding, utilizing a brand new carbon frame. The CF is a lightweight bike that exceeds the broad demands put on the gravel category. Designed with current trends and future insight.
The 3K Twill carbon finished used on this bike, makes it stiffer giving you more pedal power and provides predictable handling. A shorter asymmetric chainstay, stiffens up the rear of the bike improving handling characteristics and allowing for more chainring clearance.
This is an extremely versatile bike, capable of fitting up to 700x47c tyres or 650b road plus, should you want the extra comfort. The rack mounts, threaded BB, and hydraulic disc brakes mean that this carbon gravel bike is practical and performs well in all weather conditions.
This ‘All you need to know’ video will give you a first look at this adventure machine.
THE S-ELECTRO PRO: shred more trails with our brand new dual-sus e-bike.
The S-Electro Pro, designed with similar geometry features of our Enduro ready machine, the Slider, this e-bike is ready to shred some trails. Featuring our POP geometry coupled with a modified Horst Link suspension layout and a function designed/dictated asymmetric frame.
The S-Electro Pro is a highly capable long travel 29” eBike that is also compatible with 27.5” wheels. The Metric trunnion mount rear shock is custom-tuned to work with bikes suspension. Delivering an efficient climbing platform in climbing mode, but then turn a race-ready descender when in open mode. The Shimano pedal-assist drive system makes getting up the hills faster.

Here’s more than one kind of dirt in the world. Venture beyond the typical gravel-grinding locales and discover rice paddy roads, volcano rims, and labyrinthian jungle trails. Find your single track paradise in some of the world’s most far-reaching wildernesses.Enjoy the trails with Ride Rate Review.
The Slider LT is our new long travel enduro platform bike that takes our BURST suspension system and adapts it for long 160mm travel with 27.5′ wheels. The solid rear triangle design provides incredible lateral stiffness and combined with the short dual linkages which connect the rear triangle to the shock, allowing for fine-tuning of the progressive leverage ratio together with increased stiffening properties and pedaling performance for your ride.
The modern slack geometry, Flip Chip for BB height, head tube angle adjustment and ISCG tabs create an enduro machine that eats up the bumps while keeping calm and collected on the trail. Hydro-formed tubes, large pivots and easy cable guide management complete the package for the ultimate enduro riding machine.
World cup racer, Mariske Strauss is one of our elite team riders. She had the honor to test the first Stratos SBC bikes. For the past 4 years, she raced the award-winning Sesta but said it only took her a couple of days to adjust to the new bike. Check out our YouTube/bike check channels to see Mariske’s weapon of choice for the 2019 ABSA Cape Epic.
With the unveiling of our new XC race machine, we put in place a testing and development process to put the platform through its paces – from top-level UCI racers, through aspiring amateur riders.
A Clean slate is where Thomas, the engineer behind the Stratos started. This was essential to not limit himself to updating existing designs and suspension layouts. This is to create something truly great and innovative.
The design and development of a brand new concept is something that brews in the mind of a design engineer for some time. Before he puts pen to paper. Stratos started with the intended suspension feeling. The small bump sensitive and big hit capable, but to pedal efficiently without being locked out, and to make a challenging design brief even more so, to use full available travel without wallowing.
